About the role

The Manipulation Robotics Organization at Amazon Robotics is dedicated to advancing robotics and manipulation technologies for Amazon’s fulfillment centers. We have developed and deployed solutions like Robin, which has sorted over 3 billion packages, and our next-generation systems include item manipulation systems such as Sparrow, which picks and places individual items from cluttered totes. We utilize cutting-edge methods in robotics, perception, grasping, generative AI, and behavioral cloning to innovate for Amazon’s fulfillment centers.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business partners, applied and research scientists, software development engineers, and product managers to accelerate technology development and launch new automation solutions for robots across Amazon Robotics.
  • Help define science and engineering strategy, define product features, drive system architecture, and spearhead best practices enabling a quality product.
  • Build a strong development team and develop career plans for the scientists and engineers reporting to you.

Requirements

  • PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or Master's degree and 4+ years of industry or academic research experience.
  • 6+ years of applied research experience.
  • 3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience.
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and live-site operations.
  • Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications.
  • Experience hiring and growing top talent.
  • Strong understanding of robotics, computer vision, and machine learning (grasping, 3D geometry, classical computer vision, and deep neural networks).

Qualifications

  • Basic Qualifications: PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or Master's degree and 4+ years of industry or academic research experience; 6+ years of applied research experience; 3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience; Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language; Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations; Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application; Experience hiring and growing top talent; Strong understanding of robotics, computer vision and machine learning (Grasping, 3D Geometry, classical computer vision and deep neural networks).
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers.
