The AI Foundations team at Capital One is central to bringing our vision for AI to life. We work across the entire research lifecycle, from academic partnerships to production systems. We collaborate with product, technology, and business leaders to apply the latest advancements in AI to our business needs.
Responsibilities
- Partner with a cross-functional team to deliver AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions.
- Leverage a diverse set of technologies including PyTorch, AWS UltraClusters, HuggingFace, Lightning, and Vector Databases to uncover insights from vast amounts of data.
- Develop AI foundation models throughout the development lifecycle, from design to training, evaluation, validation, and deployment.
- Engage in cutting-edge applied research to advance AI capabilities and drive innovation in customer experiences.
- Communicate complex AI concepts to stakeholders to align on business goals and objectives.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing or recently obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Exceptionally strong programming skills in Python, C++, or similar languages.
- Experience with large-scale deep learning models, particularly in natural language processing (NLP).
- Knowledge of foundational AI methodologies, including training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, and explainability.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms like AWS and familiarity with distributed systems.
- Track record of publishing in top-tier conferences and journals such as ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 4 years of industrial experience in Applied Research or a Master's degree in a related field with 5 years of industrial NLP research experience.
- Experience with large-scale deep learning-based recommendation systems and production real-time/streaming environments.
- Contributions to open-source frameworks like PyTorch-Geometric, DGL, and experience with common open-source corpora and libraries for data quality and dataset curation.
- Experience with optimization techniques such as model sparsification, quantization, and training parallelism.
- Knowledge of transfer learning, model adaptation, and model guidance.
- Experience with large-scale deep learning models, especially those with 10B+ parameters and 500B+ tokens.
- Experience with compiler design and deep learning algorithmic design.
- Experience with inference and representation learning on graphs and sequences.
- Experience with large datasets, including those with 100m+ users.
Skills
- Strong programming skills in Python, C++, or similar languages.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and HuggingFace.
- Understanding of natural language processing (NLP) and its applications.
- Experience with distributed systems and cloud computing platforms.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Pay
Salaries for this role range from $262,500 to $299,600 in McLean, VA, and from $286,400 to $326,800 in New York, NY, Cambridge, MA, San Francisco, CA, and San Jose, CA. Actual salaries may vary based on factors such as full-time/part-time status, exempt/non-exempt status, and management level.
Schedule
This role is full-time and requires regular attendance and availability to meet project deadlines and collaborate with team members.
