Applied Lessons Instructor, Music, Adjunct, Clarinet

About the role

Primary duty is to instruct undergraduate students in MUS172: Private Clarinet Lessons with support toward course credit fulfillment, juries, and recitals. Variable 3-10 student lessons per semester based on registration and Music Program needs; maximum of 200 annual hours.

Responsibilities

• Instruction of students in MUS172: a private clarinet lesson environment. Students taking 1 credit will receive one 50-minute lesson per week for 12 weeks per semester, plus a jury (on Reading Day) or a 13th lesson.
• Development of written syllabi and required course materials, evaluation of subject matter taught, maintenance of student records, and grading of student progress.
• Advise and assist students on their progress toward the following Applied Lessons Learning Outcomes, and communicate with full-time faculty regarding any issues or deficiencies:
  • Demonstrate improvement in technical ability on the instrument studied.
  • Describe the application of various techniques to the performance of repertoire.
  • Explore a wide selection of musical literature, with an emphasis on the principal eras, genres, and cultural sources.
  • Develop, express, and defend musical judgments.
  • Express artistic and musical messages through performance.
  • Enhance basic musicianship skills, including sight-reading and basic harmonic understanding.
• Assess student progression through Applied Faculty reports and jury results:
  • Year 1: Complete required etudes, scales, repertoire, and technical accomplishments.
  • Year 2: Demonstrate progression from Year 1.
  • Year 3: Demonstrate progression from Year 2.
  • Year 4: Demonstrate progression from Year 3.
• If a student is not meeting learning outcome expectations by the midterm (7th week), complete a mock jury sheet, discuss it with the student, and email it to the Director of Instrumental Music.
• Participate in the student assessment process for juries and recitals.
• For students registered in MUS470 or MUS471 (Junior or Senior Recital), attend the pre-recital jury, recital dress rehearsal, and recital.
• Work collaboratively with accompanists, department faculty, and the department chair.
• Be present for the following occasions:
  • Department Juries
  • Department Recitals
  • Performance Lab (when needed)
  • Music Scholarship auditions
  • Other University or departmental events where requested
• Provide sample lessons to prospective students when available.
• Establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
• Perform other duties as requested, delegated, or assigned.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Music or qualified experience in the content area.
• Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience with advanced students and/or teaching experience at the college level.

This appointment is contingent upon the decision to run assigned course(s), which is at the sole discretion of the University. It may be withdrawn if scheduling requires staffing courses with a full-time faculty member. This role does not include employee benefits such as health care, dental, or other medical coverage provided by the University. It is limited to teaching applied music lessons or traditional classroom courses and does not entitle you to consideration for tenure, faculty committee assignments, or research activities associated with a full-time faculty appointment.
