About the Role

The Applications Engineer is the primary technical resource for DRS’s cooled infrared cameras. This role involves providing technical guidance, answers, and advice to customers and other DRS personnel. Candidates will engage deeply with both DRS and customer hardware/software, from definition and development to production and debug of infrared camera systems. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, sales-driven, maintains strong communication skills (written and verbal), and possesses an entrepreneurial mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-Sales:
    • Pursue design opportunities and support customer design efforts.
    • Answer RFQs and technical questions from customers.
    • Technically qualify customer requests for quotation to ensure alignment with application and operational needs.
    • Identify product or service gaps and define solutions using partners or new developments.
    • Ensure customer quotations are technically accurate, commercially verified, and offer the best all-around solution.
    • Maintain accurate and complete records in Customer Relations Management (CRM).
  • Post-Sales:
    • Provide technical oversight and troubleshooting for internal and external customers.
    • Offer advice on technical solutions and benefits.
    • Serve as the technical lead for customer-driven hardware and software solutions, either as the lead developer or as part of a small engineering team.
    • Interface with engineering teams regarding technical sales and roadmap alignment.
    • Maintain a complete, accessible technical documentation library.
    • Foster outstanding customer relations.
    • Prepare and support technical seminars and customer presentations.
    • Support the existing customer base with technology updates.
    • Provide technical guidance to other DRS personnel as requested.
    • Communicate with manufacturing locations regarding lead-time, specials, and other queries.
    • Attend customer meetings, including site visits.
    • Participate in relevant technical and commercial trainings to maintain high product and process knowledge.
    • Maintain communication with customer stakeholders to offer support.
    • Support RMA and FRB teams and processes, driving root cause and corrective action investigations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Entry-level position; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • 4-year engineering degree (BSEE or BSCS).
  • For BSEE candidates: Semiconductor and PCB design/debug experience desired.
  • For BSCS/BSCE candidates: Windows User Interface development/programming experience desired.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and excellent follow-through.
  • Demonstrated customer relations skills with a warm, friendly, and service-oriented approach.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable time after employment begins.

Desired Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Experience developing applications with Visual Basic 6.0 or Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
  • Experience developing applications with C/C++.
  • Experience with MATLAB or other numerical computing environments.
  • Experience automating test and measurement devices (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, data acquisition devices, frame grabbers).
  • Experience with PCB tools such as OrCAD.
