Application Network Engineer
This is a full-time direct hire position. We are not able to offer visa sponsorship, 1099 status, or work with C2C for this role.
About the role
We are seeking a motivated Network Engineer to join the Application Network Services team within WWT's internal IT organization. This team is the engineering owner of the platforms that deliver WWT's enterprise applications — F5 BIG-IP LTM, GTM and F5 Distributed Cloud (XC) — and is accountable for keeping those applications available, performant, and secure. This is a hands-on engineering role for an engineer who knows F5 well.
Your day-to-day work will center on supporting our application teams with network connectivity and delivery of their applications through our F5 platforms. You will partner with application owners to understand how their services need to be delivered, translate those needs into F5 configurations across our on-premises and cloud-delivered platforms, and troubleshoot connectivity, performance, and availability issues when they arise. You will also help mature how WWT uses F5 Distributed Cloud as we extend application delivery toward a globally available model. The ideal candidate has strong F5 and networking fundamentals, enjoys working directly with application teams, and brings an automate-first mindset.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical support to application teams for network connectivity and application delivery through our F5 platforms
- Partner with application owners to gather delivery requirements and translate them into F5 configurations and sound application delivery designs
- Configure, operate, and maintain F5 BIG-IP LTM, including virtual servers (VIPs), pools, nodes, monitors, profiles, iRules, data groups, and certificate management
- Build, configure, and operate application delivery services in F5 Distributed Cloud (XC), including HTTP and TCP load balancers, origin pools, routes, and service policies
- Onboard new and existing applications onto our application delivery platforms, contributing to design, configuration, testing, cutover, and post-implementation validation
- Configure and support DNS and global traffic management across F5 GTM and F5 Distributed Cloud, including wide IPs (WIPs), DNS zones, and record management
- Troubleshoot application connectivity, performance, and availability issues, performing root cause analysis in partnership with application, infrastructure, and security teams
- Advise application teams on application delivery best practices, including load balancing methods, health monitoring, persistence, TLS and certificate handling, and traffic steering
- Support Web Application Firewall (WAF) policy configuration and tuning, along with other edge protection capabilities on our F5 platforms, coordinating with application owners, internal security teams, and managed service partners
- Monitor and analyze application delivery performance and availability, proactively identifying opportunities for improvement
- Apply an automate-first approach to platform work, using automation and modern AI-assisted tooling to reduce repetitive configuration effort and improve consistency and speed
- Respond to and execute work requests and incidents via ServiceNow
- Maintain accurate documentation, standards, and runbooks for platform configuration and operational procedures
- Participate in an on-call rotation supporting our application delivery platforms
Requirements
- A minimum of 3-7 years of hands-on IT and network engineering experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field. A combination of equivalent education, training, and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
- Hands-on experience administering enterprise load balancing and application delivery platforms, with F5 BIG-IP LTM strongly preferred (virtual servers, pools, monitors, profiles, iRules, and certificate management)
- Working knowledge of DNS and global traffic management concepts, including wide IPs, DNS zones, and record management
- Solid networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, TLS/SSL, routing, switching, and firewalls
- Understanding of load balancing and application delivery concepts, including health monitoring, persistence, and traffic steering
- Demonstrated ability to work directly with application owners and development teams, gathering requirements, explaining technical concepts clearly, and guiding teams toward effective application delivery designs
- Strong troubleshooting skills for application connectivity, performance, and availability issues, with clear communication to stakeholders throughout
- Automation experience or knowledge, paired with an automate-first mindset and the ability to leverage modern AI toolsets to build and improve automations
- Demonstrated aptitude and desire to develop deep expertise in cloud-delivered application delivery services
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced enterprise environment with shifting priorities
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with F5 Distributed Cloud (XC) is strongly preferred
- Experience with cloud-native application delivery services, such as Azure Application Gateway, Azure Load Balancer, or Azure Front Door, which provides a strong foundation for growing into our F5 platforms
- Experience supporting application teams in a platform or shared-services operating model
- Familiarity with application-layer security concepts, such as Web Application Firewall policy enforcement (F5 Advanced WAF/ASM, F5 Distributed Cloud WAF, or Azure WAF)
- Familiarity with content delivery (CDN) and caching concepts
- Experience using AI-assisted tooling to develop automations, scripts, or operational workflows
- F5 certifications (e.g., F5 Certified BIG-IP Administrator, F5 Certified Technology Specialist) are a strong plus
- Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability tools supporting application delivery platforms
