About the Role Calgon Carbon is seeking a Senior Applications Engineer to provide technical leadership and application support for the sale of activated carbon, equipment, and related services in domestic and international markets. The role works closely with Sales, Equipment Engineering, Research and Development, Product Management, and other technical teams to develop customer solutions, evaluate applications, troubleshoot field issues, support pilot trials, and provide technical recommendations. The position also contributes to business development, technical training, industry events, and global initiatives. Key Responsibilities Provide technical leadership and application engineering support for activated carbon, equipment, and services.Develop market-specific technical strategies to expand existing business and identify new opportunities.Evaluate business results, troubleshoot variances, and recommend strategy adjustments.Serve as a technical lead for global Calgon Carbon initiatives.Collaborate with teams across multiple geographic regions on international projects.Provide technical support and backup assistance to Sales teams.Act as a liaison between Sales and Product and Project Management teams.Review bid specifications for technical accuracy, clarity, acceptance, and potential risks.Recommend improvements to bid specifications and help minimize technical and commercial risk.Serve as a customer technical contact when Sales representatives require additional support.Select appropriate carbon products and equipment for liquid- and vapor-phase applications.Use computer models and technical expertise to predict system performance based on customer conditions.Set up and monitor field pilot trials.Interpret laboratory and field-trial data and develop recommendations for full-scale systems.Troubleshoot customer issues, including short filter run times and unexpected breakthrough.Provide application engineering support for assigned geographic regions or Technical Sales Representatives.Collaborate with Research and Development on new carbon products and applications.Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced engineers and international colleagues.Develop and deliver technical training for Technical Sales Representatives.Prepare technical presentations, training materials, papers, and posters for customers and industry events.Attend conferences, trade shows, webinars, and industry forums as a technical representative.Support consistent technical messaging across customer-facing teams.Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent education.10+ years of experience applying carbon adsorption technology to customer requirements.Experience with liquid and gas purification applications.Experience with carbon modeling, equipment design, equipment development, and equipment functionality.5–7 years of experience using and troubleshooting adsorption equipment at customer sites.Strong technical problem-solving and analytical capabilities.Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to customers, engineers, and sales professionals.Ability to work effectively across technical, commercial, and international teams.Preferred QualificationsBusiness or marketing experience.Experience supporting technical sales or business development.Experience working with engineering consultants, regulators, clients, or other external stakeholders.Experience presenting at technical conferences or industry events.Experience providing technical training or mentoring.Skills & CompetenciesActivated carbon technologyCarbon adsorptionApplication engineeringChemical engineeringLiquid and gas purificationEquipment designEquipment troubleshootingCarbon modelingPilot testingData analysisTechnical sales supportCustomer relationship managementTechnical presentationsTraining and mentoringBusiness developmentStrategic planningProblem-solvingCross-functional collaborationInternational project coordinationEducation & Experience Education Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related engineering field required.
