Application Engineer - Python

NASA Ames Research Center’s Aviation Systems Division (Code AF) is upgrading specialized tools for airspace management, simulation, and data systems—Federated Airspace Management Framework (Freddie), National Airspace Digital Twin (NDT), and Sherlock data warehouse—for enhanced accessibility, AI/ML integration, and edge deployment. Join the Code AF Software Facility team to refactor these tools, integrate them with visualization and AI/ML platforms, and support deployments in projects such as Advanced Air Mobility Pathfinders (AAMP) and Air Traffic Management/Safety (ATMS).

Responsibilities

• Develop and refactor advanced Python applications in an Agile environment.
• Integrate tools with visualization and AI/ML platforms.
• Support deployments in aviation and air traffic management projects.
• Collaborate with other developers to commit, test, and review code in GitHub.
• Maintain software quality through automated testing and documentation practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science or related engineering disciplines.
• 3-5 years of experience (including relevant college projects) developing advanced applications in Python (3.x) and related frameworks.
• Experience with microservices, REST APIs, and asynchronous programming.
• Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS).
• Experience with Continuous Integration/Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, deployment automation, and cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Passion for quality and writing clean, scalable, and performant code.
• Proven interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively.
• Deep understanding of software quality assurance and automated testing.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent U.S. Resident (Green Card Holder).

Skills

• Desired: Experience in data engineering and AI/ML integration.
• Desired: Working knowledge of the Atlassian toolset (JIRA, Confluence).
• Desired: Familiarity with aviation and/or air traffic management concepts.
