Position Purpose
Installs, repairs, or replaces all commercial kitchen appliances throughout the District, such as ice machines, refrigerators, freezers, and washing machines; responsible for commercial kitchen appliances in Child Nutrition Services (CNS) including campus kitchens.
Responsibilities
- Installs, maintains, and repairs walk-in and reach-in freezers, refrigerators, ice machines, and other refrigeration equipment.
- Replaces compressors, condensers, evaporators, fan motors, and other electrical components in commercial kitchen equipment.
- Installs, repairs, and replaces dish machines, ovens, steam tables, warming cabinets, and garbage disposals, including heating elements, light bulbs, door handles, hinges, water solenoid valves, and related components.
- Assists in the installation of convection and steamer ovens; replaces elements and electrical components in boiler sections and steam chambers; replaces boilers when necessary.
- Repairs and replaces steam jacketed kettles and washing machines, including pumps, timers, belts, tubs, and transmissions.
- Locates and stops gas leaks; replaces burners and pilot assemblies.
- Maintains inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
- Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure safe operating condition.
- Follows established safety procedures, including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to safety protocols.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports non-correctable conditions to supervisor.
- Exhibits high professionalism, standards of conduct, and work ethic; demonstrates high-quality customer service and builds rapport with consumers.
- Demonstrates cultural competence; promotes teamwork and acts as a team player; responds appropriately in confrontational situations.
- Performs all job-related duties as assigned, including compliance with Board rules, policies, and regulations.
- Responds to emergency work requests and works overtime as required.
Requirements
- Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency.
- Clear and valid Texas Driver’s License; must be insurable by the District’s insurance carrier.
- EPA Certified Service Technician preferred.
- 2–5 years’ experience repairing, replacing, or installing commercial kitchen appliances (HVAC Refrigeration is considered an appliance).
Skills
- Knowledge of best practices, standard methods, materials, and tools used in the repair of commercial kitchen appliances and equipment.
- Knowledge of applicable electrical codes.
- Skill in estimating and calculating materials needed and tracking inventory.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, service manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
- Ability to write work descriptions, notes, instructions, and basic reports.
- Ability to diagnose and correct defects in electrical commercial kitchen appliances using wiring diagrams.
- Proficiency in basic computing and communication software.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
Physical & Mental Demands
- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment (computer, peripherals, hand-held devices); small hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments; dollies, hand trucks; light truck or van.
- Posture: Frequent standing, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
- Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions; high degree of physical dexterity; frequent walking, climbing (stairs, ladders, scaffolding), grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
- Lifting: Daily heavy lifting and carrying (50 pounds and over).
- Exerting: Occasional heavy pushing/pulling (over 100 pounds of distributed weight, often with hand trucks or assistance).
- Environment: Works outside and inside, on slippery or uneven surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; works around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; irregular hours; frequent districtwide travel.
- Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance required; occasional irregular or prolonged hours on short notice; unscheduled overtime to address emergencies (e.g., power outages, equipment malfunctions).
- Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
Insurability Requirements for Drivers
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- No positive drug or alcohol tests (pre-employment, random, post-accident, or reasonable suspicion).
- Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check (Type 3A-Certified).
- No more than 2 violations in the previous 36 months, including:
- Moving traffic violations (no more than 1 preventable accident).
- Failure to provide proof of valid driver’s license or insurance.
- Equipment violations.
- No history of:
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drugs or alcohol.
- Leaving the scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
- Vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
- Operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license.
- Reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
- Use of a vehicle in the commission of a felony.
- Operating a vehicle without owner’s permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
- Permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
- Speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
- Convictions in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
- Additional restrictions may apply as directed by FWISD’s Fleet Insurance Carrier.
Pay
Salary Range: $40,992 – $49,386
