The Physician Assistant (PA) role at Sanford Health's Black Hills Spine Ctr in Rapid City, SD, involves providing expert clinical guidance in a specialized field, coordinating patient care quality initiatives, and assisting physicians in acute, short and long term care settings.

Responsibilities

• Assists physicians in providing care to patients in acute, short and long term care settings.
• Absesses patients, performs examinations and assessments to determine patient needs.
• Analyzes and interprets information from patient history, medical records, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop and establish appropriate diagnoses.
• Rounds on patients when necessary, works in collaboration with providers and independently to provide care.
• Formulates a plan for treatment of patients and prescribes medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost.
• Maintains complete and detailed records of patients' health care plans and prognoses in a timely manner.
• Counsels patients and family members about self-management on prevention and treatment plan for health issues.
• Conducts research into area of specialty and uses findings to provide measurable improvements in patient care and clinical outcomes.
• Incorporates evidence-based practice guidelines into care.
• Maintain current knowledge of state legal regulations for advanced practice provider practices, including reimbursement of services.
• Keep abreast of regulatory processes and payer systems such as Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and private sources, as applicable.

Requirements

• Master’s or Baccalaureate degree (Associate’s or Nursing Degree if training prior to 1994).
• Demonstrated current competence and provision of care, treatment, or services for at least 30 patients in the past twelve months or completion of an ARC-PA approved program in the past twelve months.
• Successfully completed the national certifying examination and current certification given by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
• Current DEA permit to prescribe controlled substances.

Qualifications

• Eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the State of South Dakota.
• Possess NCCPA or ANCC certification.

Skills

• Extensive advanced knowledge of medical principles, practices and techniques.
