About the role
We are seeking a part-time, one-on-one, in-home high school tutor in Northern Virginia, DC, or Maryland. The ideal candidate will have past experience teaching or tutoring AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition, with additional experience in honors English, creative writing, or college essay prep being a plus.
Responsibilities
- Academic planning and instruction, including AP exam strategy, essay drafting/editing, and literary analysis.
- Conduct 60–120 minute private individual lessons in student homes, weekdays 4–10 pm, and/or weekends.
- Develop and maintain genuine, positive, and consistent communication with parents and students.
Requirements
- Experience tutoring or teaching AP Literature, AP Language, and high school English courses.
- Strong grasp of rhetorical analysis, literary critique, and essay composition skills.
- Bachelor’s degree required (degree in English, Humanities, Education, or a related field preferred).
- Current or former AP Literature and/or AP Language classroom teachers are highly encouraged to apply.
- Energized to foster positive relationships with client families.
- Highly focused, organized, with keen time management and attention to detail.
- Fast, consistent, and direct communication.
- Commitment to continuous student/tutor/team collaboration.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
- Weekly commitment of a minimum of 8 teaching hours (e.g., 1–2 weekday evenings and one weekend day).
- Consistent access to a car (work is primarily in students’ homes) and willingness to drive up to 30 minutes to a lesson (travel bonus for longer travel).
Pay
The starting pay range for this role is $45–$65 per hour. With growth and development, tutors can earn up to $80 per hour.
