About the role

This field-based position supports the Bridge Inspection Team in planning and executing statewide field inspections of primary bridges and other highway assets. Based in the Belin Dill building, the Technician assists the team leader with essential documentation—photographs, sketches, reports—and maintains inspection equipment and the assigned vehicle. On-the-job training provides hands-on mentorship in inspection techniques, and qualified candidates may eventually inspect ancillary highway assets independently.

Work environment

This is an active, outdoor role requiring statewide travel. Field inspections occur in challenging conditions, including:

  • Exposure to weather and traffic
  • Wading in streams and rivers
  • Working in dark, confined spaces
  • Climbing ladders and navigating uneven, slippery, or rocky terrain
  • Traversing steep slopes and remote areas

Fieldwork is most intensive from April through November; the remainder of the year is typically spent in the office on inventory management, data entry, report verification, and other projects.

Responsibilities

  • Assist team leader in planning and conducting field inspections of bridges and highway assets
  • Document asset conditions through photographs, sketches, and reports
  • Maintain inspection equipment and team vehicle
  • Perform inventory management, data entry, and report verification
  • Carry equipment (up to 40 pounds) and traverse rough, wooded, or steep terrain
  • Work in boats or on structures above ground level
  • Occasional out-of-state travel

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field
  • OR Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related field AND two years’ experience performing engineering support tasks (planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research, testing, investigation, maintenance)
  • OR High school graduation or equivalent AND four years’ experience as described above
  • OR One year as an AOT Technician I with the State of Vermont
  • Valid driver’s license (required for some positions)

  • Specialized technical skills and field experience in highway bridge inspection and condition assessment
