37.5 hrs./wk., 10-month temporary grant-funded position effective August 21, 2026. Contract may be renewed annually pending grant funding. Salary: Grade 5, Step 1, $27.62/hour.

About the role

This position involves close interaction with staff, students, and parents/guardians, focusing on implementing specialized or vocational education programs for medically fragile students. The Program Assistant works under the direction of a licensed teacher, responding to crisis situations with initiative and creativity while maintaining confidentiality and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specific health care for medically fragile students as outlined in the IEP and Health Care Plan, including but not limited to:
    • Gastrostomy (g-tube) feeding
    • Surface suctioning
    • Vagus Nerve Stimulation
    • Other procedures as allowed by law
  • Assist students under the direction of licensed staff by:
    • Tutoring and monitoring/administrating assessments
    • Implementing classroom procedures and reinforcing positive behavior
    • Reinforcing organizational and note-taking skills
    • Grading materials for immediate feedback
    • Demonstrating use of technology for instruction, drill, and remediation
    • Assisting with homework assignments
    • Operating medical equipment used by students
    • Assisting students during bus loading/unloading
    • Supporting students' medical and non-medical physical needs, including personal care/toileting
    • Developing knowledge of software to support staff and students
    • Implementing students' health care and evacuation plans
  • Assist Education Association staff by:
    • Helping organize and supervise off-campus programs
    • Performing classroom-related clerical tasks
    • Assisting with lab setup and cleanup
    • Previewing instructional materials
    • Explaining classroom procedures to substitute teachers
    • Acting as a liaison to communicate and record student progress data
    • Providing health-related information to case managers and/or nurses
    • Compiling data and documenting health information/services provided
  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance job performance.
  • Cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with staff, students, and community members.

Requirements

  • Must have or obtain State and NCLB Approved Paraprofessional designation per Illinois State Board of Education requirements.
  • Physical ability to:
    • Lift/move supplies, materials, and equipment up to 50 lbs
    • Lift/move students needing assistance
    • Sit at a workstation for extended periods and/or move frequently within the building
    • Perform frequent movements including sitting, walking, standing, stooping, bending, pushing wheelchairs, and using ramps
  • Organize and prioritize workflow.
  • Proficiency in computers, office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Project a positive image of the district and exhibit a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills and communicate clearly and respectfully with students, staff, parents, and the public.
  • Awareness of student needs, including physical and social-emotional needs.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required.
  • Complete district-approved Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training.
  • Complete district-approved training to support medically fragile students in accordance with IEPs and Health Care Plans.
  • Previous experience working with youth and young adults.
  • Ability to adapt to all subject areas.
