Anticipated Long-Term Substitute - Spanish Teacher

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, this long-term substitute position develops students' knowledge, skills, and abilities in comprehending, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish, while fostering an understanding and appreciation of the cultures where Spanish is the primary means of communication.

Responsibilities

• Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials; translates plans into learning experiences to challenge students and best utilize available time.
• Teaches Spanish language skills, including comprehension, grammar, syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary, proper word usage, and colloquialisms.
• Develops student understanding and appreciation of cultures and mores of Spanish-speaking countries.
• Prepares materials for literary publications, contests, and related activities.
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress; modifies instruction to fit individual needs, including students with special needs.
• Stays current with professional knowledge and educational developments by attending seminars, workshops, or conducting research.
• Maintains accurate and complete records of student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures.
• Encourages parental involvement and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
• Coordinates with other professional staff, participates in faculty meetings and committees.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment; maintains inventory records.

Requirements

• PA State Certification as a foreign language teacher in Spanish.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching.
• Master’s Degree in a related area preferred.
• Successful prior foreign language teaching experience is a plus.

Skills

• Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
• Proficiency in Spanish grammar, word usage, literature, and cultural understanding.
• Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
• Familiarity with applicable federal and state education laws.
• Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
• Strong organizational and coordination skills.
• Effective communication with students and parents.
• Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Required documents: Letter of Interest, Resume, Certification, Transcripts (all colleges/universities attended), Praxis Scores (all areas of certification), and 3 letters of reference dated within the past year. If available, include current Act 34, Act 151, Act 114, and Act 126 clearances. Current student teachers may submit transcripts and a university letter indicating eligibility for certification in place of the PA teaching certificate and Praxis Scores.
