Animal Care Volunteer Program (Unpaid)
About the Role
The Animal Care Volunteer Program supports the Zoo & Aquarium’s animals, employees, and mission. Under direct supervision, volunteers perform routine assignments involving the maintenance and care of habitats. Volunteers do not have direct contact with the animals. Candidates may be placed on one or more Animal Care Teams.
Responsibilities
- Cleaning and general upkeep of animal habitats and surrounding areas (75%):
- Hosing, scrubbing, and sweeping
- Disinfecting equipment, bathrooms, kitchens, and animal holding areas
- Washing dishes and doing laundry
- Taking out trash and recycling
- Cleaning glass windows on animal habitats
- Yardwork maintenance, as needed
- Supporting the daily care and well-being of animals (20%):
- Assisting with diet prep
- Preparing enrichment for animals
- Assisting with animal observations
- Engaging with visitors to answer questions about Zoo & Aquarium animals (5%)
- Performing other duties or special projects as assigned
Duties and percentages may vary slightly between each Animal Care Team.
Appointment and Time Commitment
This position is appointed for a period of three months and may be renewed for another three months at the supervisor’s discretion. After six months, volunteers may rotate to another position pending approval. Yearlong opportunities depend on area needs and supervisor discretion.
Volunteers must average a minimum of 3 shifts per month. Shift availability varies by team and may change seasonally.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Willing to work in all weather extremes and get dirty
- Sufficient mobility to ensure a safe work environment and complete assigned tasks
- Able to be stationary for extended periods
- Willing to complete basic animal safety courses prior to commitment
- Must pass a background screening
- Must have or be able to obtain a negative TB test
Support
Training for this position will be provided. The Area Manager and Volunteer Contact will be available for questions and assistance.
Dress Code
Neutral colored pants or shorts, provided shirt, comfortable close-toed shoes, and weather-appropriate outerwear.
