Animal Care Technician II

About the role

The Animal Care Technician II provides exemplary animal care and adheres to all department and AbbVie regulatory expectations. This role supports the AbbVie drug discovery and development process through animal husbandry and oversight, maintaining the vivarium and support areas, and performing daily tasks involved with cleaning and sanitizing equipment, stocking supplies, and handling research animals.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily activities such as cleaning and spraying cages, disinfecting and sanitizing equipment, and stocking supplies.
• Follow department procedures for cage cleaning, room sanitation, equipment preparation and moving, and cage changes.
• Maintain daily husbandry tasks through proper execution of training materials and assigned tasks.
• Handle, carry, and hold animal cages and animals; use and move carts, hoses, and other lab equipment.
• Provide comprehensive observation and handling of various research animals.
• Assist with receiving and housing research animals, including preparing for housing activities.
• Document tasks in both written and electronic platforms in accordance with regulatory expectations.
• Maintain area of responsibility by practicing good observation skills and attention to detail.
• Use experience and training to make minor decisions supporting animal care operations.
• Apply basic computer skills to maintain regulatory compliance and training (e.g., email, calendar, computer-based training modules).
• Assist in developing departmental documentation and training materials.
• Ensure duties are completed accurately and timely to avoid impacting pipeline activities or regulatory expectations.
• Provide basic technical husbandry training to new employees.
• Mentor and coach peers in performing assigned tasks.

Requirements

• High school education and a minimum of one year of experience in a laboratory animal care facility, or an Associate’s Degree in a related field.
• AALAS certification at the ALAT level or above.
• Problem-solving ability to handle basic issues autonomously and collaborate on complex issues.
• Strong communication skills to relay issues to management and interact with internal and external staff.
• Ability to safely lift 50 pounds and stand/walk for extended periods, including grasping, squeezing, pushing, pulling, squatting, stooping, and bending.
• Willingness to work a rotating schedule, including mandatory weekend and holiday coverage.
• Ability to work in compliance with all local, federal, GLP, FDA, and USDA regulations.
• Effectiveness in a GLP environment and team-oriented workplace.
• Attention to detail to ensure good animal welfare.

Pay

The compensation range for this role is based on the job grade and may vary depending on geographic location and other factors. Individual compensation will be determined within this range.
