Animal Care Specialist

About the role

The Animal Care Specialist at ACC provides a high standard of animal care to ensure the welfare of animals at the ACC Care Centers. They interact extensively with animals, observing their health and behavior, and communicate this information to relevant departments.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a clean, healthy living environment for each animal, including scheduled feedings, clean water, proper bedding, and enrichment toys.
• Clean and sanitize kennels, wards, cages, equipment, and shelter areas as assigned, following ACC policy and procedures.
• Exercise and socialize animals regularly, adhering to ACC’s dog walking guidelines.
• Observe and document unusual behavior, signs of illness, and injuries of animals daily.
• Communicate vital information to medical, behavior, adoption, and New Hope departments as needed.
• Restrain, confine, and handle animals, including those that are ill, injured, quarantined, or aggressive.
• Be knowledgeable and conversational about ACC policies and common animal welfare practices.
• Work cooperatively with ACC volunteers and partners.
• Process animal intakes as needed.
• Provide excellent customer service to individuals using ACC services, including greeting warmly and providing detailed information about specific animals.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Six months of previous animal care or custodial experience, or equivalent education in a related field, is required.
• Treats animals and people with respect.
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for 8 hours or more.

• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others.
• Attention to detail and strong work ethic.
• Confidence in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
• Love for animals and ability to interact calmly and non-threateningly.
