Animal Care & Adoption Specialist (Part Time)

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

  • Feeding - Ensure each animal receives the proper amount and type of food prescribed and always has fresh water (unless prohibited for a medical reason).
  • Cleaning - Maintain a clean, comfortable environment for all animals, including proper disinfection and removal of fecal matter/debris.
  • Infection control - Practice consistent infection control procedures, wearing PPE when necessary.
  • Socialization - Provide appropriate social contact and experiences for all animals, documenting interactions.
  • Record Keeping - Log behaviors, eating habits, and any unusual occurrences, informing coworkers.
  • General Housekeeping - Keep workstations and common areas clean and tidy.
  • Laundry - Perform laundry as needed.
  • Grooming - Ensure animals are clean, groomed, and free from fecal matter, providing baths if necessary.
  • General Wellbeing - Report any signs of illness to the supervisor immediately.
  • Exercise - Ensure animals receive daily exercise.
  • Housekeeping - Maintain cleanliness of the front desk and reception area.
  • Miscellaneous - Assist with animal intake, report unsafe or broken equipment to supervisors.

Adoptions

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service with prospective adopters and clients.
  • Understand client needs and initiate the matchmaking process.
  • Ensure new clients complete the adoption survey.
  • Provide walk-throughs introducing potential adopters to resident animals.
  • Describe physical and behavioral attributes of animals to potential adopters.
  • Converse with potential adopters to build rapport and educate them on responsible pet ownership.
  • Supervise and mentor volunteers.

Specific Work Requirements

  • Ability to walk, bend, stand, lift, reach, stoop, carry, push, and pull for at least 8 hours per day.
  • Lift packages and large bags of food (up to 40 pounds), as well as bags of kitty litter (up to 40 pounds).
  • Lift large animals for grooming.
  • Speak and hear sufficiently to understand the job.
  • Write neatly and communicate with others.
  • Maintain visual acuity to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to restrain animals.
  • Able to attend staff meetings and training classes.
  • Understand the needs of the animals.

Preferences

  • Retail/Customer service experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One year experience in animal care (optional)
