Responsibilities
- Feeding - Ensure each animal receives the proper amount and type of food prescribed and always has fresh water (unless prohibited for a medical reason).
- Cleaning - Maintain a clean, comfortable environment for all animals with appropriate bedding. Properly disinfect areas and remove any fecal matter or debris.
- Infection control - Follow infection control procedures, wearing PPE when necessary.
- Socialization - Provide social contact and appropriate experiences for all animals and document interactions.
- Record Keeping - Log behaviors, eating habits, and any unusual occurrences, informing coworkers.
- General Housekeeping - Keep workstations and common areas clean and tidy.
- Laundry - Perform laundry as needed.
- Grooming - Ensure animals are clean, groomed, and healthy, including nail clipping and eye/ear cleaning. Bathe animals immediately if necessary.
- General Wellbeing - Report any signs of illness to the supervisor promptly.
- Exercise - Ensure animals receive daily exercise.
- Front Desk/Reception Area - Maintain cleanliness and tidiness.
- Miscellaneous - Assist with animal intake, report unsafe or broken equipment, and provide general support.
Adoptions
- Demonstrate excellent customer service with prospective adopters and clients, making them feel welcome and comfortable.
- Understand client needs and initiate the matchmaking process.
- Ensure new clients complete the adoption survey.
- Provide walk-throughs introducing potential adopters to resident animals.
- Be knowledgeable about animals' physical and behavioral attributes and educate adopters on responsible pet ownership.
- Converse with potential adopters to build rapport and gather relevant information.
- Supervise and mentor volunteers.
Specific Work Requirements
- Ability to walk, bend, stand, lift, reach, stoop, carry, push, and pull for at least 8 hours per day.
- Lift packages and large bags of food weighing 25-40 pounds, as well as bags of kitty litter up to 40 pounds.
- Lift large animals for grooming.
- Speak and hear sufficiently to understand the job.
- Write neatly and communicate with others.
- Have visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to restrain animals.
- Attend staff meetings and training classes.
- Able to understand the needs of the animals.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- One year experience in animal care is preferred.
