Anesthesiologist
About the role
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Responsibilities
- Conduct the preanesthetic history and physical.
- Formulate an anesthetic plan, induce anesthesia, and maintain depth of anesthesia at appropriate levels.
- Support life functions during the preoperative period and recognize abnormal patient responses.
- Provide direct professional observation and resuscitation until the patient has regained control of his vital functions.
- Maintain a complete and legible documentation of the perioperative course.
- Maintain continuing education activities.
- Assessment of, consultation for, and preparation of patients for anesthesia including pre-operative patient exam and assessment.
- Provision of insensibility to pain during surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures and the management of patients so affected.
- Maintenance of homeostasis during the perioperative period, as well as homeostasis in the critically ill, injured, or otherwise seriously ill patient.
- Evaluation of respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy in all its forms.
- Supervise, teach, and evaluate performance of both medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia, respiratory, and critical care.
- Administer anesthesia services at all locations that FNCVACHCS performs surgeries/procedures.
- Involvement in quality improvement efforts.
- Ensure the safety of the patient and take required action to correct safety deficits immediately.
- Initiate CPR in and outside the O.R., respond to calls requiring anesthesia skills within and outside the operating room.

Qualifications
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Completion of anesthesiology residency, BLS and ACLS Certification, board certification or eligibility is required by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently to move objects.

Schedule
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. On-call coverage is required.

Background/Security Investigation
The staff Anesthesiologist is accountable to Section Chief, Anesthesiology, to provide the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the medical center in compliance with VA and VHA Directives and The Joint Commission accreditation standards.
