About the Role

To provide anesthesia and pain management services to emergency and surgical patients of both an elective and emergency nature. On occasion, may support University of Michigan Health Anesthesia needs at other UM Health locations, including UM Health Sparrow Lansing, UM Health Sparrow Clinton, UM Health Sparrow Ionia, UM Health Sparrow Eaton, and UM Health Sparrow Carson.

Responsibilities

• Work under the supervision/direction of an anesthesiologist.
• Obtain appropriate health history including biophysical and psychosocial data.
• Conduct appropriate physician screening assessment.
• Recommend, request, and evaluate pertinent diagnostic studies.
• Select, obtain, order, or administer pre-anesthetic medications.
• Document the pre-anesthetic evaluation and obtain informed consent for anesthesia.
• Obtain, prepare, or utilize all equipment, monitors, supplies, and drugs used for the administration of anesthesia; perform or order safety checks as needed.
• Select, obtain, or administer anesthetics, adjunct drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic, maintain the patient's physiologic homeostasis, and correct abnormal responses to anesthesia or surgery.
• Perform tracheal intubation and extubation and provide mechanical ventilation.
• Perform and manage regional anesthetic techniques including subarachnoid, epidural, caudal blocks, plexus, major and peripheral nerve blocks, intravenous regional anesthesia, transtracheal, topical, and local infiltration blocks as credentialed and monitored.
• Provide appropriate peri-anesthetic invasive and non-invasive monitoring utilizing current standards and techniques and respond to abnormal findings with corrective action.
• Recognize and treat cardiac dysrhythmias through peri-anesthetic electrocardiogram monitoring.
• Recognize abnormal patient responses during anesthesia, select and implement corrective action, and request consultation when necessary.
• Manage the patient's fluid, blood, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
• Evaluate patient response during emergence from anesthesia and institute pharmacological or supportive treatment to ensure adequacy of recovery.
• Provide anesthesia care consistent with infection control and anesthetic safety principles.
• Document all aspects of anesthesia-related care thoroughly and timely in the medical record.
• Provide a thorough report of the patient's condition, peri-anesthetic course, and anticipated problems to post-anesthetic health care providers.
• Provide post-anesthesia follow-up and evaluation for potential anesthetic complications, taking corrective actions and requesting consultation as needed.
• Initiate and administer respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the immediate post-anesthesia period.
• Initiate and administer pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system during the immediate post-anesthesia period.
• Insert peripheral and central intravenous catheters as credentialed.
• Insert arterial catheters and perform arterial puncture to obtain arterial blood samples as credentialed.
• Identify and manage emergency situations, including initiating or participating in cardiopulmonary resuscitation involving airway maintenance, ventilation, tracheal intubation, pharmacologic cardiovascular support, and management of blood, fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
• Provide consultation and implementation of respiratory and ventilatory care.
• Initiate and modify pain relief therapy utilizing drugs, regional anesthetic techniques, or other accepted modalities.
• Select or prescribe medication and treatment modalities related to peri-anesthetic care, with consultation or collaboration when appropriate.

Requirements

• Current Michigan RN license and CRNA Specialty Certification.
• ACLS certification required within six months of hire.
• Graduate from a nurse anesthesia education program accredited by the AANA Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.

Schedule

• Full-time, employed by Sparrow Hospital.
