Ancil Payne Reporting Fellowship

About the role

ProPublica is seeking a two-year Ancil Payne reporting fellow to conduct enterprising investigations focused on the state of California. The fellow will report and write stories, collaborate on complex projects, and work alongside the new California team.

Responsibilities

• Take on a mix of short-, medium- and long-term stories, including reporting and writing original, in-depth stories.
• Collaborate on major investigations, such as the one about booster seat safety.
• Work independently and with colleagues to develop increasingly complex stories.
• Report stories that are both important and powerfully told.
• Seek out fresh angles and approaches for covering the news.
• Travel for assignments, staff meetings, and trainings as necessary.
• Work well with others in a highly collaborative newsroom.

Requirements

• At least three and no more than seven years of professional journalism experience.
• A strong accountability lens focused on California.
• A track record of asking tough questions and publishing original, revelatory stories.
• Perspectives and life experiences that drive fresh angles and approaches for covering the news.
• Eligibility to work in the U.S.

Qualifications

• Has a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
• Experience with data analysis and research methods.
• Strong writing and editing skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Benefits
