Doctorate-level position in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM). This 12-month, full-time Anatomy Postdoctoral Fellow role (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027) is renewable for up to three years and focuses on teaching medical Gross Anatomy while supporting scholarly research.

About the role

The Anatomy Postdoctoral Fellow will deliver laboratory instruction in the team-taught Gross Anatomy curriculum for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MS) programs. The DO curriculum integrates gross anatomy into systems-based courses across the first and second years using lectures, asynchronous didactics, dissection labs, and group activities. The MS curriculum teaches gross anatomy as part of an integrated Human Anatomy & Physiology course with lectures and prosection-based labs.

The fellow will collaborate with faculty mentors to gain experience in clinical anatomy education and advance their own research initiatives. Professional development is essential, with limited funding available for conference or workshop attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a table trainer for DO and MS anatomy lab sessions
  • Assist program faculty and/or graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) in preparing prosections
  • Participate in team-based, integrated teaching sessions
  • Develop and deliver evidence-based anatomy teaching materials and educational resources
  • Participate in practical exam question review, set-up, and proctoring for DO and MS programs
  • Support anatomy education through institutional resources such as the on-site plastination facility, virtual reality software, and osteological collections
  • Engage in research or scholarly activity, with access to research workspace

Requirements

  • A completed Doctorate Degree is highly preferred; candidates who have completed all but the doctoral dissertation may be considered if there is a clear and short timeline toward completion
  • Experience in related subfields such as histology, embryology, or imaging is a plus but not required
  • Strong commitment to teaching excellence, as this is the primary responsibility

Salary is commensurate with training and experience at standard national rates (e.g., NIH levels).
