Anatomic Pathology Technologist, Cytopathology Laboratory - Full-Time, Day Shift
About the Role
Join UChicago Medicine, a world-class academic healthcare system, as an Anatomic Pathology Technologist in the Cytopathology Laboratory. This 100% onsite position supports the receipt and preparation of cytology specimens and involves gross examination and dissection of biopsy specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area and are eligible for a sign-on bonus up to $10,000.
Responsibilities
- Provides patient-focused care through accurate performance of routine and complex tests in the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic stages.
- Checks specimens to ensure proper testing is performed.
- Accurately opens, labels, numbers, and verifies patient identity; enters information from test requisitions into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Accurately enters gross descriptions in patient reports.
- Processes cytology specimens, including fine needle aspirations, non-gynecological smears, and gynecological monolayers using ThinPrep Pap test technique.
- Prepares specimens for all types of special stains, including slide coverslipping and labeling.
- Assists with the maintenance of all stains, reagents, and instruments in the laboratory.
- Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly logs.
- Operates, troubleshoots, and documents resolutions for laboratory equipment, including ThinPrep instrumentation, staining, coverslipping, centrifuges, and other instruments.
- Ensures completion of quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance documentation.
- Maintains section inventory, including supplies and specimens, and notifies supervisors of shortages or problems.
- Maintains open communication with supervisors, managers, MD directors, and coworkers regarding important testing information.
- Answers inquiries about specimen handling, results, and other technical information; assists clinicians with requests and seeks resources when necessary.
- Assists in new testing, procedures, and equipment validation and implementation.
- Participates in process improvement initiatives as invited by the supervisor.
- Engages in educational and training activities to acquire new skills, maintain technical relevance, and improve proficiency.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in clinical laboratory science, life sciences, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Must satisfy CLIA 88 personnel qualifications for performing high complexity testing.
- Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory instrumentation.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet software, and laboratory/hospital information systems.
- Ability to handle large volumes of work within narrow timeframes, with outstanding organizational ability and attention to detail.
- Ability to maneuver and lift bulky containers.
- Professional interaction with individuals at all levels.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification or eligibility as a Medical Technologist (MT) or specialist through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.
Schedule
- Full-Time (1.0 FTE)
- Day Shift: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Pay
The pay range reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected for this position, based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and current market data. Compensation at hire will vary based on candidate qualifications, experience, and organizational considerations such as internal equity.
