About the role

Global Financial Crimes Compliance (GFCC), within Global Risk & Compliance (GRC), is responsible for the enterprise-wide Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Sanctions, and Anti-Corruption compliance programs. GFCC partners closely with business, risk, and control functions to ensure consistent financial crime risk governance and regulatory compliance across the enterprise. GFCC provides independent second line of defense (2LOD) oversight of financial crime risks across American Express, including oversight of evolving payment models and third-party partnerships such as embedded finance, digital wallets, marketplaces, payment facilitators, acquiring models, ATM networks, joint ventures, and other network-based payment structures.

This role is part of the GFCC cross-border organization and supports the continued evolution of the international GFCC teams through project coordination and cross-regional collaboration. The role will coordinate strategic initiatives, strengthen governance processes, and support the implementation of consistent Financial Crimes Compliance (FCC) practices across international markets. The role will also support enterprise projects and the continued enhancement of the Third-Party Financial Crime Risk oversight framework.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage project plans, action trackers, and governance documentation to ensure timely delivery of strategic initiatives and remediation activities.
  • Monitor and report on project milestones, risks, dependencies, and remediation activities, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Prepare executive presentations, governance materials, dashboards, and reporting to communicate progress, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership, auditors, and regulators.
  • Support the Third-Party Financial Crime Risk Program by developing and maintaining procedures, coordinating Requests for Information (RFIs) and escalations, and supporting remediation activities and policy enhancements.
  • Coordinate across the three lines of defense to foster collaboration, communication, effective challenge, and accountability.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in Compliance, Financial Crimes Compliance, Risk Management, Audit, Legal, Project or Program Management, or Control Management within financial services
  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and deliver in time-sensitive and ambiguous situations
  • Strong analytical problem-solving and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build effective relationships and collaborate across countries, business units, and all levels of management
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States (the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions)

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Sanctions, Anti-Bribery & Corruption, or broader Financial Crimes Compliance programs
  • Experience supporting cross-functional or international projects
  • Bachelor’s degree required; CAMS, project management certification (PMP, Agile, or equivalent), or other relevant professional qualifications preferred
