Alternative Education Teacher

About the role

The Alternative Education Teacher coordinates and provides a supervised and structured environment for students assigned to the in-school suspension program within Alexandria City High School-Chance for Change.

Responsibilities

• Promotes adherence to established rules and regulations of the in-school suspension program and creates an effective climate for learning.
• Serves as a liaison between the administrative staff, classroom teacher, and students assigned to the program to obtain and return the student’s daily class work and homework.
• Assists students assigned to the program with completing their regular classroom assignments.
• Instructs students on replacement behaviors through the use of the social skills curriculum and restorative practices.
• Communicates appropriate behavior, school rules, and regulations to students in the program.
• Communicates with students the reasons for their ISS assignment and allows students to reflect on their behaviors and its impact on their education.
• Instructs, guides, and encourages students to develop a positive attitude toward learning.
• Makes sure students who have been assigned to in-school suspension are monitored and reviewed for progress.
• Develops and implements a data collection protocol including student monitoring and progress monitoring of grades and behavior.
• Communicates with parents and classroom teachers regarding student behavior and progress.
• Reports inappropriate behavior by students to professional staff members.
• Reports the effectiveness of the program to administrative staff and makes suggestions for improvement.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
• Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one.

Knowledge

• Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices preferred.

Clearances

• Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
• Tuberculosis Skin Test.
