Alternate Media Specialist

About the Role

Under the direction of the Director of Disabled Student Programs & Services, the Alternate Media Specialist oversees the production of alternate media to enable students, staff, and community members with disabilities to access all instruction and services provided by the college. This role serves as the primary campus contact for media access for students with disabilities and provides technical assistance to college staff and faculty regarding legal requirements and technology for making all types of media accessible. The specialist also consults on access issues related to Distance Education.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the production of alternate media, including E-text, large print, Braille, audio recordings, closed/open captioning, kiosks, teleconferencing, descriptive audio, and phone services.
  • Consult with the college on accessibility issues for electronic media and ensure compliance with access guidelines.
  • Request supplies, hardware, software, and materials; maintain accurate inventory and records of media production, permissions, and priorities.
  • Provide assistance and training to students in the operation of adaptive computer technologies and equipment.
  • Maintain records on the configuration and location of all access technology across campus; assist with installation and configuration.
  • Provide group in-service and one-on-one training to college personnel on designing and developing accessible electronic information.
  • Offer technical assistance and consultation to the campus community, including the Book Center, Library, computer labs, and career development.
  • Research and stay current with emerging technologies in the alternate media field; maintain a database of materials, orders, and archives.
  • Develop and maintain a resource bank of access strategies for distance education; assist in designing accessible web pages and distance education materials.
  • Maintain a positive, helpful, and constructive attitude while fostering effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, faculty, staff, students, and the community.
  • Learn and apply emerging technologies to perform duties efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Train and provide work direction to others as directed.
  • Participate in District/College efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion; attend related trainings and events.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Two years of experience using technology to create alternate media formats.
  • Training in the field of assistive technologies/alternate media.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

Skills

  • Knowledge of the special needs and requirements of disabled students.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology, electronic information equipment, software, and programs for individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, including Sections 508 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, AB422, and copyright law.
  • Knowledge of electronic media such as closed/open captioning, kiosks, teleconferencing, descriptive audio, and phone services.
  • Knowledge of distance education access guidelines for community colleges.
  • Knowledge of online program/course delivery, effective web page design, layout, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of District organization, operations, policies, and objectives.
  • Ability to provide group and one-on-one in-service training on alternate media issues.
  • Ability to troubleshoot computer software and hardware problems related to alternate media production.
  • Ability to produce alternate print materials (E-text, large print, Braille, audio recordings).
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to assess, analyze, implement, and evaluate research project activities.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work; meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and provide work direction to others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in a higher education setting, preferably within Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) or a comparable student support program.
  • Demonstrated experience creating accessible instructional materials, including captioning, document remediation (PDF, Word, PowerPoint), multimedia accessibility, and Braille production.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and guidelines, including Section 508, WCAG 2.1, and ADA requirements.
  • Experience using and supporting assistive technologies such as screen readers (JAWS, NVDA), text-to-speech software, Braille translation software (Duxbury, Braille2000), and other adaptive tools.
  • Proficiency with software and tools for alternate media production, such as Adobe Acrobat Pro, OCR tools, Braille embossing/translation systems, captioning platforms, and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).
  • Experience providing training or technical assistance to faculty and staff on accessibility compliance and inclusive instructional practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and maintain accurate production workflows.
  • Experience supporting distance education and ensuring accessibility of online/hybrid course content.
  • Experience promoting equity-minded practices and supporting a diverse population of students and employees.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive and welcoming work/educational environment.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (schedule and shift are subject to change based on department needs).

District employees may apply for the Flexible/Hybrid Work Program, allowing a hybrid schedule of remote and in-person work each week. Approval and in-person days may vary by position/department.

Pay

Salary range: $6,284 – $7,588 per month.
