ALS Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist
About the role
This position provides technical support to engineering staff engaged in the design, development, fabrication, installation, testing, operation, and maintenance of electrical and electronic systems, equipment, and experimental apparatus within the Engineering Division. While assigned to the Advanced Light Source (ALS), under general supervision, the role performs complex technical support activities in the field of electronics fabrication, installation, testing, and maintenance within an accelerator environment.
Responsibilities
- Fabricate and/or install complex electronics hardware including chassis, instruments, printed circuit boards, cables, wiring harnesses, equipment racks and consoles, and control and instrumentation cross-connect / inter-connect cabling systems.
- Support accelerator operations, shutdown activities, upgrades, and maintenance projects.
- Respond to operational support needs and participate in troubleshooting activities affecting accelerator or beamline systems.
- Operate hand, power and machine tools of the trade.
- Read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component layout diagrams.
- Follow generalized written or verbal instructions. Select appropriate components, packaging enclosures and manufacturing techniques and procedures. Implement appropriate codes and standards associated with the trade.
- Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic systems and equipment in laboratory, shop, and accelerator environments.
- Use standard electronic test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, network analyzers, and related diagnostic tools.
- Identify equipment malfunctions and implement corrective actions with minimal supervision.
- Perform measurements, calculations, and operational checks necessary to verify system functionality and performance.
- Ensure work is performed in compliance with Laboratory policies, electrical safety requirements, engineering standards, and applicable procedures.
- Participate in work planning, hazard analysis, job safety reviews, and integrated safety management activities.
- Interact with engineers, designers and electronics coordinators on matters relating to finished product design, technical performance and documentation criteria. Provide input to cost estimates and production/installation scheduling.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience working in the electronics field.
- Substantial understanding of electronics theory, electro-mechanical, scientific principles, and mathematics. Knowledge and ability to use complex test equipment, diagnostic routines and procedures and appropriate hand, and power tools of the trade.
- Ability to correctly interpret complex schematics, and assembly, calibration, maintenance, and operating manuals.
- Ability to safely operate a variety of electronics test equipment including oscilloscopes, digital and analog multimeters, function generators and pulse generators.
- Work experience performing general troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex electronics.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment to successfully accomplish assignments.
- General knowledge of equipment design procedures and techniques.
- General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases, and word processors.
- Color vision sufficient to discern wiring and component color codes, and safety-related colored signs, lamps and warning devices.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs.).
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Certifications: Certifications in relevant areas such as NRTLs, CE Marking, etc., may be preferred.
- Experience: Experience with electronics fabrication, installation, testing, and maintenance in a laboratory setting.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in using electronic test equipment, programming languages, and software tools relevant to the role.

Pay
The expected hourly range for this position is $40.90 - $49.18, which fits into the full hourly range of $36.77 - $53.32 depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Schedule
The position is full-time and non-exempt, eligible for overtime pay. Hours and days of work will be determined based on the needs of the department and the individual's qualifications.
