Responsibilities
- Manage the laboratory quality improvement/quality assurance program in coordination with the Lab Quality team and the Alliance Lab Technical & Compliance team.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement planning.
- Collect, monitor, and evaluate quality indicators to identify areas for improvement and report to the Laboratory QI/Integrity Committee.
- Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate/re-evaluate technicians/technologists on the team where assigned.
- Care for SPS training with SPS team as needed.
- Maintain documentation of continued competency and continuing education for laboratory staff.
- Review and improve as needed the routine record keeping across the assigned lab(s)/location(s) (maintenance, quality control, temperature monitoring, etc.).
- Care for proficiency testing as required by lab accrediting agencies.
- Care for policy and procedure development, implementation, and revisions with the Alliance Lab Technical & Compliance team.
- Represent Alliance Lab teams in lab information/IT settings.
- Implement safety rules and regulations in compliance with the institution, state, and federal standards.
- Ensure laboratory's continuous compliance with all regulations.
- Work with the Alliance Lab Leadership team for long-term planning of department operations including anticipation of staff and space needs and changes in procedures.
- Develop operating and capital budgets, monitor expenses and revenue, investigate and report budget variances.
- Manage the maintenance of instrumentation and inventories.
- Make recommendations for the selection of new laboratory instruments, related equipment, and supplies.
- Represent the Alliance Lab at meetings with other health care personnel at Fred Hutch or elsewhere in the medical system.
- Attend assigned committee meetings as required.
- Serve as a liaison between the lab and other teams in Fred Hutch, University of Washington, and outside the organization.
- Communicate information, both technical and administrative, to the appropriate faculty, directors, and staff.
- Contribute to projects across departments and partner organizations. May include travel to other sites.
- Develop and monitor comprehensive productivity metrics, perform continuous and thorough analysis to achieve effective utilization of available resources.
- Support the development and maintenance of adaptable laboratory systems to meet evolving clinical research needs.
- Collaborate on the strategic planning and implementation of infrastructure, workflows, and financial models that facilitate clinical research activities within the laboratory.
- Assist Principal Investigators and research administration teams in aligning scientific goals with operational capabilities, fostering coordination and project success.
- Provide training and guidance on clinical laboratory processes, procedures, and regulatory compliance, as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution or a Bachelor's degree and equivalent education and training as defined in 42CFR493.1489(b)(3).
- Must meet the CLIA education requirements for a high complexity testing.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist/Histocompatibility Technologist or equivalent certification with certified maintenance (as required by individual certification) of continuing education through ASCP, AMT, AAB, ABHI or equivalent agency.
- 6 years of accumulated clinical laboratory experience performing testing on human samples required, including 2 years training and experience in the designated discipline or area of service.
- At least 2 years of previous experience in a lead/senior tech/coordinator role or 1 year of previous experience in a supervisor/manager/director role (must be verified by title) in a clinical lab with a total of 4 years of clinical lab experience performing high complexity testing in lieu of 6 total years may also be acceptable.
- Knowledge of CLIA and CAP regulations.
- Demonstrated direct or indirect leadership of lab projects (new test validation, process improvement, employee engagement, etc.).
- Good communications skills (written, oral).
- Proficient with MS Office Suite.
- Ability to Develop and/or present content to senior leaders and other groups.
- Demonstrated experience with change management, conflict resolution, and complex problem solving.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement is a must.
