Airport Technician
About the role
This position performs a variety of work in maintenance and repair of the County’s airport and related infrastructure. It involves inspecting airports for safety and maintenance needs, maintaining and repairing runways and other areas, assisting in emergency response, and performing general custodial work.
Responsibilities
- Assists with daily airport operations, including opening and closing of runways and airport services.
- Maintains and repairs runways and other paved and unpaved roads and areas, including crack repair, minor asphalt repair, pavement sealing, and striping for airfield markings.
- Maintains grounds, including mowing grass, removing weeds, removing debris, watering lawns and shrubbery, trimming shrubbery and trees, applying pesticides, maintaining and repairing fencing and gates; maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
- Maintains and repairs assigned equipment and tools in a safe, proper working condition and in accordance with maintenance schedule.
- Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment, including paint striping equipment, and weed eater; operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignment as instructed.
- Performs general custodial work including cleaning and stocking restrooms, patrol and removal of litter, conducting daily trash pick-ups, monitoring inventory of custodial supplies and initiating verbal or written supply requests.
- Assists in emergency response; initiates calls to response teams; locates aircraft; preserves accident scenes; responds to fires and medical emergencies, providing assistance to emergency personnel as needed.
- Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
- Assists with stormwater sampling, assists with maintaining appropriate stormwater forms, manual and plans, monitors and ensures compliance with stormwater regulations and may assist Airport Manager with Stormwater Management Plan (SWPPP) updates.
- Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
- Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, and complaints regarding areas of responsibility.
Requirements
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing electrical and plumbing equipment and systems, in performing general carpentry and construction work, and in maintaining and repairing asphalt, concrete and unpaved areas. Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility. Principles of mathematics related to work. Operational characteristics of specialized construction maintenance and repair equipment. Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work. Read and understand SDS sheets and chemical labels. Principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting. Modern office practices, methods of computer equipment and applications related to the work. English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively communicating with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff. Operation of aviation radio operation. Emergency preparedness and response procedures. FAA and Airport procedures in shutting down movement areas. Familiarization with the airport including layouts, orientations, regulations, and procedures of airport safety areas as related to the safe and efficient operation of the airports.
Qualifications
- Ability to interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations, and County policies and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality on all matters related to airport business.
- Perform skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, equipment and facilities, including electrical equipment and systems.
- Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
- Read and interpret manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Adjust to tasks and focuses with composure to meet changing deadlines and priorities.
- Use initiative to perform preventative or reparative maintenance.

- Provide assistance and support for distressed or disabled aircraft and assist in emergency operations by operating airport radios, providing information and notifying emergency response services.

- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines in politically sensitive situations.
