What You’ll Do
- Assemble primary and secondary composite structures per engineering drawings, work instructions, and assembly procedures
- Perform structural bonding operations and execute surface prep per engineering requirements
- Conduct fit checks, shimming, and alignment of composite assemblies to engineering tolerances
- Install fasteners, inserts, and hardware into composite structure using correct tooling and torque procedures
- Execute in-process and final inspections including visual, dimensional, and tap-test checks; identify and document non-conformances
- Execute minor composite repairs as required to support assembly progression
- Read and work from engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, assembly models, and manufacturing work orders
- Handle, inspect, and stage composite parts and subassemblies in accordance with storage and FOD control requirements
- Collaborate with structures engineers to provide real-time build feedback and support root cause on fit or quality issues
- Maintain accurate records in shop travelers, inspection logs, and non-conformance documentation
What You Bring
- 3–6 years of hands-on experience with composite structures in an aerospace, defense, or advanced manufacturing environment
- Background in composite fabrication (prepreg layup, bonding, cure operations) that informs strong material handling instincts and quality awareness
- Experience assembling composite airframe or structural components, including bonded and fastened joints
- Solid understanding of composite bonding surface preparation
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship quality
- Must have U.S. person status as defined by ITAR
Desired Skills
- FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) certificate is a strong plus
- Experience with aircraft assembly, both structures and systems
- Background in experimental aircraft (EAA & homebuilding)
- Familiarity with 3D model-based definition (MBD) or NX/SolidWorks part views
Contract Terms
- 6–8 month independent contractor engagement (October 2026 – April 2027 expected)
- Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience
- On-site work at FHE’s Portland, OR facility
- Contractors are responsible for their own benefits and tax obligations
