Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Helper

About the role

This position is located at the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan, KS.

Responsibilities

• Works with Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanics in installing, operating, maintaining and repairing building heating, ventilation, and cooling systems, commercial and industrial air handling units, heat recovery units, and air terminal units.
• Works with Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanics in installing, operating, maintaining and repairing building refrigeration systems including environmental growth chambers, and all associated control systems.
• Performs repair and project work associated with other trades such as repairing plumbing and electrical systems.
• Understands and follows pertinent repair and maintenance manuals, drawings, and follows oral or written directions.
• Observes and adheres to safety and housekeeping rules, assures proper use of personal protective equipment and tools such as metering and gauging devices.
• Uses centralized computer management software to accurately maintain records such as documenting or recording equipment numbers, time, materials, and work performed as required for preventative maintenance, planned maintenance, etc.
• Applies guidelines and follows biosafety procedures established for up to BSL-4 containment facility to unique situations that arise within the biological containment facility.

Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt
Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check
Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement:

• Must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Helper without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT).

Physical Effort

The work requires performing duties in utility spaces, on ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard-to-reach places. This involves walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long period of time. Work requires close hand and eye coordination. The incumbent frequently lifts 75 pounds with proper support or move with assistance, heavy objects weighing more than 75 pounds.

Special Physical Requirements/Demands

SAC and full background investigation required for positions working with BSL-3 (or higher) agents, or in BSL-3/BSL-4 facilities.
