AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

Summary

You will serve as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in the Public Works Department of NAVFAC Engineering CMD Mid-Atlantic.

Duties

• Diagnose, locate and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large, complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems (HVAC).
• Test for refrigerant leaks and use a refrigerant recovery/recycling station, to Environmental Protection Agency standards, to safely reclaim, recycle and store the refrigerant before repairs can be made.
• Repair HVAC systems and components in structures such as warehouses, hangars, hospitals, large office buildings and complexes.
• Conduct visual and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment, and by exploration of probable reasons for equipment failure.

Requirements

• Must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this position. A copy of your certification must be submitted with your application.
• Must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
• Must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations.

Screen-Out Elements

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position requires the ability to:

• Plan work schedules and sequence of operations for the work force supervised.
• Set in-shop priorities and determine the number and type of personnel required to accomplish job assignments.
• Assign work to subordinates either orally, by providing written instructions, or electronically through the Computerized Facilities Management System.
• Train subordinates in safety regulations and other regulations and policies established by the Federal Government.
• Inspect work in progress to ensure productivity, efficiency, economy and safety of operations.
• Give detailed supervision and resolve working problems as required.
• Furnish information regarding such matters as on-the-job injuries, accidents, and CPR and respirator certification records.
• Enforce safety, fire, and other regulations, and see that good housekeeping is maintained in work areas supervised.
• Obtain, issue, and advise on the use of safety equipment.
• Keep supervisor informed concerning job progress, technical and personal problems encountered or unsafe conditions not within his/her own ability to correct.
• Attend meetings concerning requirements, specifications and technical matters relating to assigned work.
• Recommend new methods, material or equipment for expediting and improving work execution.

Additional Information

• May be required to serve on-call duty on a rotational basis. When on-call, incumbent is required to carry a duty cell phone and duty pager and must remain available to respond on site to after-hour emergencies within two hours.
• May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
