About the Role

Assist the special education teacher in the preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, data collection, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation and management of classroom activities
• Support the implementation of classroom programs (self-help, behavior management, data collection, and instruction)
• Help meet the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities
• Follow verbal and written instructions
• Maintain confidentiality
• Perform light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) frequently
• Perform occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities
• Assist nonambulatory students and control behavior through physical restraint when necessary
• Lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate (can be obtained once hired)
• Have met formal academic assessment, associate's degree, or two years of study at an institution of higher learning

Qualifications

• Ability to work well with children with disabilities
• Knowledge of general office equipment
• Two years of experience working with children

Working Conditions

• Work with frequent interruptions
• Maintain emotional control under stress
• Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
• Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over)
• Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather)
• Exposure to noise and biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases)

Pay

Pay Grade: IS203

Pay Rate: Minimum $16.05; Midpoint $19.34
