AI Software Engineer
About the role
The Software Engineer position at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska is responsible for working with cross-functional business teams to research, design, test, and maintain various systems and applications. This role involves providing engineering knowledge and experience to deliver solutions to the business both on new builds, as well as support on modifications and maintenance for existing programs.
Responsibilities
- Design and build the LangGraph-based system that classifies member intent and routes to the right agent.
- Design and implement the agent integration contract, including input schema, output schema, confidence signaling, latency SLA, and fallback behavior.
- Develop a multi-turn conversation management system that maintains full member context across agent handoffs.
- Implement a guardrail and safety layer to ensure clinical safety boundaries, PHI handling, and response normalization.
- Design and implement a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipeline architecture for benefits documents, formularies, and policy content retrieval using Azure AI Search.
- Define the ingestion strategy, chunking approach, hybrid search configuration, and retrieval quality standards for Azure AI Search.
- Create a versioned prompt registry, structured output contracts, and few-shot pattern designs for prompt architecture.
- Debug retrieval quality problems, iterate on chunking strategies, and deal with stale knowledge bases in a live system with real users.
- Build evaluation systems from scratch, including golden datasets, automated regression, and domain-appropriate accuracy metrics.
- Work in an existing codebase and extend it with the AI layer, using Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, and Azure Container Apps.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of experience in software development.
- Experience with agentic AI in production, including systems with multiple agents, explicit state management, and real users depending on the answers being correct.
- 1-2 years of building and operating production LLM or agentic AI systems.
- Knowledge of LangGraph, AutoGen, or custom graph-based orchestration used in production.
- Experience debugging retrieval quality problems, iterating on chunking strategies, and dealing with stale knowledge bases in a live system with real users.
- Experience in healthcare, insurance, fintech, or legal domains, where a wrong answer has consequences and you designed the safeguards that make accuracy non-negotiable.
- Strong knowledge of Python, working in an existing codebase and extending it with the AI layer.
- Experience in an Agile/Scrum environment.
- A strong desire to think creatively and address customer needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience creating Single Sign On (SSO) experiences.
- Possess emotional intelligence.
Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must have a Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of experience in software development. You should also have experience with agentic AI in production, including systems with multiple agents, explicit state management, and real users depending on the answers being correct. Pay
The pay range for this position is $80,000 - $120,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
Schedule
This position allows remote flexibility but requires a 1-day per week in-office presence. If living in one of the approved states (Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Texas), the person may travel to the headquarters.
