AI Product Engineer
About the role
MainStreet Family Care runs urgent care and primary care clinics across four states, primarily in rural areas, bringing walk-in healthcare to small-town America. Behind every clinic visit is a mountain of billing and insurance work — the revenue cycle — handled by real people doing repetitive, detail-heavy work. We’ve built a working beta of an internal artificial intelligence (AI) agent tool that takes that grunt work off their plates. As the owner of this product, you’ll take it from beta to daily essential, writing code, deciding what to build next, and working directly with the revenue cycle team to make it better every week.
This is a forward-deployed engineering role: you’ll embed with the team you’re building for, see the impact of your work in real time, and own the product end-to-end. Your “customer” is our own revenue cycle team, sitting down the hall, not behind a sales cycle.
Responsibilities
- Build and evolve our AI agent beta into a product the revenue cycle team uses daily, writing interfaces, integrations, and agent workflows in a modern Azure stack.
- Own the product: identify friction points, decide what to build, ship it, and measure its impact without relying on a product manager for specs.
- Work within a HIPAA-compliant architecture, handling protected health information (PHI) securely through Azure and Microsoft Entra.
- Drive adoption by shipping, teaching, observing usage, and iterating based on real feedback. Success is measured by whether people choose to use what you build.
- Collaborate directly with the CEO in weekly product reviews, with no layers of approval.
Requirements
- A software developer with roughly 1–3 years of experience who prioritizes building effective, user-focused products over engineering for its own sake.
- Strong enough to build independently as the sole engineer on this product, with executive support but no senior dev reviewing your pull requests.
- Experience tinkering with large language models (LLMs) and agents; side projects count, and we value scrappy, shipped work over buzzwords.
- Able to sit with non-technical teammates, understand their workflows, and explain your work in plain English.
- Self-directed, curious, and comfortable with open-ended goals like “Here’s the goal. Figure it out.”
- No healthcare experience required, but you must care deeply about the people using your software and take pride in your work.
We’re hiring early-career intentionally and are selective. If you’re the person your team routes hard problems to, or you’ve shipped something you technically weren’t supposed to know how to build yet, this role is for you. Career changers with a knack for AI are also encouraged to apply.
Benefits
- Ownership you can’t get elsewhere at this stage: this is a founding engineer seat for our internal AI function, with first-in-line leadership opportunities as it grows.
- A portfolio-defining product: “I built and own the AI agent platform inside a HIPAA-compliant architecture, used daily by a multi-state healthcare company’s revenue cycle team” will open doors for your career.
- Real users, real impact, fast feedback: see your work save people hours in the same week you ship it.
- Startup potential: if early work succeeds, this could evolve into a standalone startup, with you as a founding member.
