This is a fall 2026 internship opportunity with Global Security (GS) at HII Mission Technologies. The role supports the Principal AI/ML Engineer in advancing space simulation and AI development for the USSF customer.

About the role

You will collaborate with a cross-functional team of AI engineers, modeling and simulation engineers, product owners, and program managers to develop artificial intelligence models integral to a larger pipeline, delivering value to the end customer. The role focuses on advanced AI to support space superiority analytics, multi-domain and joint service operations, force structure planning, Joint Combatant Command analysis, Space Force testing and training, and research and development of space systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build software from source for different platforms using various compilers.
  • Develop acceptance, integration, and unit tests for a variety of technologies.
  • Develop new capabilities leveraging existing libraries.
  • Participate in software design meetings and code reviews.
  • Perform issue backlog and board maintenance.
  • Provide execution plan and status report inputs.
  • Write user and developer documentation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be working towards a Bachelor's degree with more than 60% of the required credits completed.
  • Interest in Space Operations.
  • Solid technical writing skills.
  • Willingness to tackle difficult problems and learn new languages (e.g., AFscript).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable in agent-based, event-driven simulators.
  • Knowledgeable in at least one scripting language.
  • Familiarity with Git, GitLab, JFrog Artifactory, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Willingness to learn and provide insight into the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling (AFSIM), a C++ based modular object-oriented, multi-domain, multi-resolution modeling and simulation (M&S) framework for military simulations.
  • Prior internship or work within the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Physical Requirements

Job performance will normally require only minor lifting and carrying of boxes of records or equipment.

Pay

Anticipated salary range: $42,836.00.
