About the Role

We are seeking an experienced AI System Architect to lead the design and development of our multi-agent AI platform at Optum Insight. In this pivotal role, you will own the architecture that underpins advanced AI capabilities used daily by our customers, including real-time voice translation, voice-based assessments, and call quality audits. You will drive the evolution of our Document AI and Virtual Investigator systems to accelerate data intake, surface risks early, and generate clear, explainable answers to complex investigative questions. Additionally, you will work at the forefront of fraud detection by integrating real-time machine learning with graph analytics to identify emerging hotspots, uncover collusive networks, and prevent improper payments before they occur. Your expertise will set the technical direction for orchestration and governance on Azure, raise engineering standards, and mentor a globally distributed team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape how agentic AI operates at scale, with high-stakes impact and ownership, in a flexible remote environment within the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture and evolution of our multi-agent AI platforms, enabling reasoning, planning, and external tool interaction via LLMs and modular services
  • Define standards, best practices, and technical vision for AI orchestration across various product lines, including voice agents and fraud detection systems
  • Guide the adoption of frameworks like LangChain, AutoGen, and Semantic Kernel; integrate emerging protocols such as Model Context Protocol (MCP) for scalable interoperability
  • Design innovative agentic user experiences, leveraging LLMs as intelligent interfaces to enterprise tools and APIs
  • Architect full-stack voice agent pipelines, including automatic speech recognition (ASR), multi-turn dialogue management, text-to-speech (TTS), and telephony integrations (SIP, Twilio, etc.)
  • Oversee development and deployment of ML models for fraud and anomaly detection, emphasizing scalability, explainability, and real-time responsiveness
  • Lead deployment of AI/ML systems using Azure cloud-native tools, ensuring security, observability, and cost efficiency
  • Mentor senior and junior engineers, lead architecture reviews, and coordinate cross-team technical delivery in a globally distributed environment
  • Establish standards for AI governance, experimentation, monitoring, CI/CD pipelines, and lifecycle management of models

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 8+ years of experience in building production software, including 3+ years as a technical lead for AI or ML product development
  • 5+ years of professional Python experience with hands-on use of ML or NLP libraries such as PyTorch, Hugging Face, or scikit-learn, including deploying models or pipelines to production
  • 3+ years of experience building and operating Spring Boot microservices in production, including API design, automated testing, CI/CD, and incident management
  • Proven experience shipping at least one LLM-based system that interacts with external services or enterprise APIs via tool calling or function calling, with defined evaluation and monitoring
  • Experience with retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and semantic search solutions using vector search, embeddings, and external knowledge integration
  • Hands-on Azure architecture experience, deploying workloads using Azure OpenAI, Azure Functions, Event Hubs, Cognitive Search, Cosmos DB, and related services
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without employer-sponsored visa sponsorship

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range from $145,500 to $249,500 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Incentive and recognition programs to reward performance
  • Equity stock purchase options and 401(k) retirement plan contributions
  • Flexible remote work environment within the United States, with in-office requirements for employees in Minneapolis and Washington, D.C.
  • Opportunities for professional development and career growth in a forward-thinking organization
  • A collaborative and inclusive workplace culture committed to diversity and equity
