About the role

The AI & Machine Learning Communications Manager (75% FTE) is responsible for creating and executing marketing and communications strategies for the academic and research programs of the AI & Machine Learning for Engineering Graduate Programs, AI Center for Dynamics and Control, and the NSF AI Institute in Dynamic Systems. This position interacts regularly with institute directors, faculty and research/administrative staff across the College of Engineering, and reports to the Associate Director of Communications and External Relations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage communications and marketing strategies for the AI & Machine Learning for Engineering Graduate Programs, the AI Center for Dynamics and Control, and the NSF AI Institute in Dynamic Systems, based on program goals developed in partnership with the Director and Managing Directors.
  • Write web stories on faculty, students, and new research and collaborations.
  • Manage websites for multiple education and research programs. This includes ensuring accessibility, updating web content (program information, videos, images), and ensuring sites adhere to UW brand guidelines.
  • Establish and implement social media strategies for units: write copy and create interactive content, set goals for and monitor interaction with accounts, coordinate activity with related initiatives, programs, and departments.
  • Manage YouTube channel for the AI & Machine Learning for Engineering Graduate Programs.
  • Create and distribute regular print and email publications (e.g. e-newsletters, annual reports).
  • Write, design and distribute email campaigns targeting AI & Machine Learning for Engineering Graduate Programs' prospective students and alumni, in partnership with the Academic Services Director.

  • Write copy for and design brand-consistent marketing materials (brochures, flyers, invitations, and announcements).
  • Collaborate with relevant UW departments to place stories about units in UW publications, on websites and social media channels.
  • Develop presentations and talking points on units’ achievements and plans for directors.
  • Nominate directors, faculty, and students for relevant speaking opportunities and awards.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with external affairs office, dean's office, central marketing and communications, advancement, advisory boards, and external partners to ensure smooth execution of communications strategies and special presentations, and to obtain participation and support of key constituents.
  • Track and manage video recording of education modules that make up courses in the graduate certificates. This includes organizing the team that is involved in module recording, managing the module recording schedule, ensuring strategic support is provided to faculty who are recording modules, ensuring all modules are recorded in time for course offerings, and facilitating professional captioning of completed videos.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, English or other related field
  • At least two years managing communications programs in an academic research environment or engineering, or technology-focused organization or company, or related field
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to translate technical subject matters for a general audience
  • Ability to use social media platforms to effectively and responsibly communicate brand message
  • Experience managing websites
  • Experience working in WordPress or Drupal
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office: Outlook, Excel, Access, Word
  • Working knowledge of Adobe products: Photoshop, Acrobat Professional, InDesign
  • C competence in HTML and content management systems; ability to communicate effectively about web and internet related topics with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Attentive to detail and able to work independently with limited oversight
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a diverse workplace
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Proven organization and multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced environment
