About the Role

The Distinguished AI Engineer role at Capital One offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development of large-scale AI systems that revolutionize banking experiences. This remote-eligible position involves collaborating with cross-functional teams of engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to design, develop, and deploy sophisticated AI solutions. The engineer will work on foundational AI models, including large language models, similarity search, and governance frameworks, utilizing a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, PyTorch, and VectorDBs. The role requires inventiveness in optimizing AI models for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency, while contributing to the long-term technical vision of Capital One’s AI systems. The ideal candidate will be passionate about building impactful systems that change how customers and associates interact with banking services, and will thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment dedicated to responsible AI deployment.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or AI with at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms, or Master’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java with a minimum of 8 years of experience
Experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
Strong background in AI model development, including LLM inference, similarity search, and vector databases
Ability to lead and mentor engineering teams and influence stakeholders up to VP level
Deep understanding of hardware and software optimization techniques for AI training and inference
Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field (preferred)
Experience with responsible AI practices, model governance, and observability

Responsibilities

Partner with multidisciplinary teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance customer and employee experiences
Design, develop, test, and deploy AI software components, including foundation models, inference engines, and governance tools
Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies to build scalable and efficient AI systems
Implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques to improve model performance, latency, and cost-efficiency in production environments
Contribute to the strategic vision and roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One
Ensure AI solutions adhere to ethical standards, compliance, and governance policies
Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex technical challenges
Stay current with the latest research and advancements in AI and machine learning, applying innovative techniques as appropriate
