AHEC Scholars Program

What is the AHEC Scholars Program?
The AHEC Community Health Scholars Program is a 1-year program that enables high-potential medical assistants to explore primary care with an emphasis on community health and interdisciplinary practice in medically under-resourced communities.
Who is eligible?
- Medical Assistants who are starting their technical program.
- Other allied health programs, on a case-by-case basis.
Program Requirements
- Complete a minimum of 40 hours of didactic learning on our online platform Moodle consisting of 9 modules, 4 case studies, and one webinar. Four virtual training sessions will be scheduled to cover the Moodle content.
- Minimum 10 hours working on a community project on a topic of your choice. Each student must submit a minimum of 2 page paper and a visual aid such as PPT presentation, flyer, pamphlet etc, in addition, each student must submit a program evaluation survey.
- Complete a minimum of 140 clinical hours at a CCALAC member health center. *Health center placement is facilitated by CCALAC program manager*
Is this opportunity paid?
The program provides a yearly stipend that varies upon the availability of funds.
Program Timeline
- Applications open: March 2, 2026
- Interviews on a rolling basis
- Applications Extended: July 19, 2026
- Acceptance letters: July 2026
- Mandatory Orientation August 7, 2026
- MANDATORY in-person orientation is scheduled August 7, 2026 at the CCALAC Offices located at 445 S. Figueroa St. Suite 2100 Los Angeles, CA 90071 from 9:00am-4:30pm. No virtual options are available. Failing to attend in-person orientation, makes you ineligible to participate in the program.
Training Sessions Schedule
- Modules 1 & 2: August 14, 2026 – 9am-12pm
- Modules 3 & 4: August 21, 2026 – 9am-12pm
- Modules 5 & 6: August 28, 2026 – 9am-12pm
- Modules 7 & 8 September 4, 2026 – 9am-12pm
- Module 9 will be covered during orientation.
- Please note: training sessions are mandatory and required to complete the Moodle content. Trainings will not be recorded.
