Responsibilities
The Agriscience teacher is responsible for organizing and conducting an instructional program that:
- Improves the quality of Agriscience education instruction, counseling, management, and leadership to produce success for all students;
- Uses strategies for integrating academic and Agriscience education;
- Provides information to students about career pathways in agriculture, food, and natural resources to guide skill development for continued education and employment;
- Delivers educational and equitable experiences leading to career preparation, continued education, and employment;
- Enhances youth leadership and FFA as an integral part of instruction;
- Equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a global economy;
- Informs students about agriculture and agricultural literacy.
Instructional Program
- Prepare lesson plans in conformity with school policy for all courses offered;
- Use effective instructional materials and methods to enhance teaching and learning;
- Develop basic skills and abilities of students in the school laboratory.
FFA/Leadership Development
The FFA is an integral part of the instructional program. The teacher will serve as advisor for the local FFA chapter and:
- Plan and conduct leadership, citizenship, and cooperative activities for students at district, area, state, and national levels;
- Assist students in selecting supervised agricultural experience (SAE) programs that fit their interests and abilities;
- Maintain records for all students in Agriculture Science and FFA;
- Locate training stations for students in Work-Based Learning programs, if offered;
- Coordinate instructional programs with training experiences at the training station;
- Make supervisory visits during the school year and summer months;
- Supervise the school laboratory (e.g., farm, feeding center, greenhouse, meats laboratory) used for SAE.
Records and Reports
- Prepare and submit FFA rosters, entries, registrations, and other required documents promptly to local, district, area, state, and national offices;
- Maintain accurate file copies of all records and reports.
Public and Professional Relations
- Actively participate in civic, professional, agricultural, and community organizations;
- Keep the public informed as part of the public relations program.
Professional Improvement
- Maintain membership in professional organizations;
- Regularly attend and participate in district and area in-service meetings;
- Attend summer workshops designed to provide professional skills and information;
- Attend the State Professional Improvement Conference for Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Teachers;
- Dress and conduct themselves in accord with professional standards.
Evaluation of Program
- Develop challenging and obtainable program goals and objectives;
- Evaluate outcomes of instruction;
- Work with an advisory committee to determine needed improvements;
- Make changes and adjustments as necessary.
Maintain Facilities and Equipment
- Properly arrange and maintain classroom, shop, and laboratory spaces;
- Plan for and maintain visual aids and references;
- Order new equipment and supplies;
- Coordinate maintenance and repair of tools and equipment;
- Establish and monitor procedures for keeping all areas neat and attractive;
- Teach and enforce shop and laboratory safety, ensuring safety items are available and equipment safety features are functional;
- Conduct an annual inventory of all tools, equipment, and supplies, providing a copy to administrators.
Guidance
- Provide students with information about career pathways to guide skill development for continued education and employment, in cooperation with the guidance counselor.
Cooperative Activities
- Cooperate fully with local administrators and keep them informed about the program;
- Work closely with local and county agricultural organizations/agencies.
Off-Campus Supervision of Students
- Supervise students at all off-campus activities such as conventions, contests, workshops, and field trips associated with the program and FFA.
Professional Ethics
- Maintain professional and personal ethics in dealings with students, parents, and community leaders.
Summer Programs
- Plan and submit a Summer Program of Agriscience to administrators;
- Maintain a summer program including FFA activities, teacher in-service, program development, and educational activities;
- Work with administration to develop and carry out summer programs.
Schedule
12 months or 240 work days per year.
