About the role

The New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center at Farmington is seeking an Agricultural Science Center Laborer to assist with the daily operations and maintenance of agricultural research and demonstration activities.

Responsibilities

• Plant, harvest, cultivate, and irrigate experimental research plots and research field crops
• Mow, edge, and water lawns, trees, and shrubs; rake leaves and remove debris
• Spray for weeds and insects; distribute, mix, measure, and apply fertilizers and pesticides to research field crops and experimental plots
• Operate farm equipment including tractors and harvesters
• Operate large power lawn mowers, edgers, and hand tools
• Operate NMSU vehicles for hauling debris and transporting equipment and supplies
• Assist in putting up fences, fixing roads, and maintaining sheds and buildings; perform repairs and/or construction of fences, roads, sheds, and buildings
• Clean shops, sheds, and barns
• Feed, water, and care for research livestock; clean and sterilize cages, stalls, and feeding equipment

Requirements

• High school diploma or higher degree

Working conditions

• Environment: Almost constant exposure to extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and other potentially dangerous materials/situations requiring safety precautions and protective equipment
• Physical effort: Considerable physical activity; physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job
• Lifting requirements: Heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds
• Risk: Exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations requiring extensive safety precautions and protective equipment

Pay

Target hourly rate: $16.83

Schedule

Shift: Other (non-standard). May require work on weekends and evenings.
