About the role

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in preserving, collecting, and organizing large volumes of electronically stored information (ESI) for litigation, Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and investigations.
  • Supporting Legal Bureau attorneys in identifying relevant electronically stored information.
  • Creating document databases using eDiscovery platforms, preparing document review workflow, productions and privilege logs.
  • Assisting Legal Bureau attorneys in negotiation of ESI discovery obligations with external parties and represent the NYPD's interests in court conferences and other proceedings.
  • Providing ongoing eDiscovery platform end user training and technical support to Legal Bureau personnel.
  • Performing hands-on early case assessment, document review and analysis using eDiscovery platforms.
  • Developing practical solutions for document reviews and productions.
  • Serving as the main point of contact to eDiscovery vendors and NYPD technical staff.
  • Advising and support Legal Bureau personnel with early case assessment and case review strategy.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
  • One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
  • Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).

Qualifications

  • To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
  • To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

Preferred Skills

  • Admission to the NYS Bar, and at least 2 years of relevant legal experience.
  • Strong interest in eDiscovery, litigation support, and technology-assisted legal processes.
  • Familiarity with eDiscovery platforms or willingness to quickly learn (training provided).
  • Familiarity with federal and state discovery rules and procedures.
  • Experience with data management, information governance, or compliance.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to prioritize requests, meet deadlines, and manage multiple concurrent projects across a high volume caseload.
  • Able to recognize or assess document and subject sensitivity and maintain confidentiality concerning same.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Minimum Qualifications: 1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below. 2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or 3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086). Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment. In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements: To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
