About the role
The YMCA of Greater New York seeks an Afterschool Senior Counselor to lead and support the Y Afterschool program, including Holiday Camps. This role involves ensuring participant safety, planning engaging activities, and fostering a supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide appropriate supervision and ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants.
- Plan and implement activities, lesson plans, and special events that promote learning, interaction, and personal growth.
- Prepare the learning environment and necessary supplies for program activities.
- Support the coordination and presentation of a culminating performance.
- Assist with homework and academic enhancement activities.
- Work cooperatively with program and school staff.
- Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment.
- Create and maintain a strength-based atmosphere that supports participants with diverse needs.
- Serve as a positive role model.
- Maintain accurate program documentation.
- Communicate YMCA values and program goals to participants and caregivers.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents/guardians and caregivers.
- Participate in training sessions and special events.
- Adhere to departmental standards, expectations, and regulations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth under the age of 13 in a group setting.
- College credits preferred.
- General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfort working with diverse youth and adults.
- Availability to work Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
