About the role
The YMCA of Greater New York seeks an Afterschool Senior Counselor to lead and support the Y Afterschool program, including Holiday Camps. This position involves ensuring participant safety, planning engaging activities, and fostering a supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide appropriate supervision and ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants.
- Plan and implement activities, lesson plans, and special events tailored to the needs of school-age children.
- Prepare the learning environment and necessary supplies for program activities.
- Support the coordination and presentation of a culminating performance.
- Assist participants with homework and academic enhancement activities.
- Work cooperatively with program and school staff.
- Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment.
- Create and maintain a strength-based atmosphere for participants.
- Actively participate in training sessions and special events.
- Adhere to departmental standards, YMCA values, and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Two (2) years of experience working with youth under the age of 13 in a group setting is required.
- General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfort working with diverse youth and adults are essential.
- Availability to work Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. is required.
