About the role

Alpha Hours is a part‑time, in‑person afterschool program in Manhattan’s Financial District. You will lead students in grades 3‑8 through high‑energy afternoons that blend AI‑powered academics with hands‑on life‑skills workshops. The role splits time roughly 50/50 between guiding students through Alpha’s adaptive, mastery‑based academic program and facilitating workshops in public speaking, goal‑setting, collaboration, and other practical skills. You own the room—setting pace, maintaining behavior standards, keeping students focused and motivated, and giving real‑time feedback as they prepare to demonstrate growth at the AlphaTest Showcase.

Responsibilities

  • Run high‑energy academic sessions: launch sessions, set expectations, and keep 3rd‑8th grade students focused as they work independently through Alpha’s adaptive academic program.
  • Lead hands‑on life‑skills workshops: facilitate activities in public speaking, goal‑setting, collaboration, and other practical skills.
  • Motivate students in real time: notice when energy or focus drops and intervene quickly to get students engaged and moving forward.
  • Coach students toward visible growth: give clear feedback as they practice new skills and prepare to demonstrate them at the AlphaTest Showcase.
  • Own the room: maintain strong behavior standards, positive energy, participation, and pace from start to finish of each session.
  • Drive high student engagement and continued participation by creating focused, motivating academic sessions and high‑energy life‑skills experiences.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in person in Manhattan’s Financial District every Monday–Thursday from 3:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. (≈20 hours per week).
  • Currently enrolled in college or have completed a bachelor’s degree.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience directly responsible for school‑age children (school, camp, afterschool program, youth program, coaching, tutoring, etc.).
  • Ability to independently manage a group of students, maintain clear behavior standards, and keep students focused and motivated.
  • Strong verbal communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to give clear instructions and generate active participation.
  • Willingness to attend paid training before independently running sessions.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Skills

  • Experience leading groups of students in grades 3‑8.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, camps, extracurricular programs, or other highly participatory student activities.
  • A track record of keeping students engaged and motivated in group settings.
