About the role

The After School Counselor provides direction for the program and classroom and implements program curriculum under the supervision of the Youth Development Director. The position is part-time (20-30 hours per week) and open at several YMCA locations.

Responsibilities

  • Implements curriculum within the established guidelines provided by the Director.
  • Designs and implements daily lesson/activity plans.
  • Supervises the children, classroom and all activities.
  • Engage fully with all children.
  • Aid all children with homework and other academic needs.
  • Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with children.
  • Maintain program site and equipment.
  • Wear provided staff shirt and name tag while working.
  • Maintain required program records, such as sign in/sign out rosters.
  • Attend and participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Meet educational and experience qualifications established by state law.
  • Complete CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and assigned Redwoods trainings within 30 days of hire date.
  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs.
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violations of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.
  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

Qualifications

Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities. Ability to be physically active to include but not limited to walking, sitting, squatting, standing, kneeling, climbing, running, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc. Must have the physical, visual and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
