About the role

The Public Safety Officer, under the supervision of the Public Safety Lt., patrols assigned areas of the Medical Center to identify and/or respond to unsafe conditions and emergencies. Officers respond to calls for service pertaining to unauthorized or illegal activity within the building or campus grounds, including combative patients or visitors, fire alarms, infant/child abduction, and active shooter situations.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine inspections for hazards, unusual situations, and safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, eye wash stations).
• Lock or unlock doors, handle trespassing issues, and manage property receipt and issue.
• Test and inspect Public Safety and safety equipment monthly, including alarm systems, infant abduction systems, fire alarms, medical gas alarms, and generators.
• Respond to emergencies (e.g., fire, biological, mass casualty, hospital lockdown, radiation emergencies, active shooter) and provide physical safety support.
• Investigate reports of lost/damaged property and criminal activity; assist law enforcement with custody-related matters.
• Monitor and coordinate responses to all alarms on the property; perform building and door inspections to ensure timely opening/closing.
• Pick up and deliver daily cash deposits to the cashier’s office.
• Search patient rooms and property for contraband and take safety steps if found.
• Respond to AirCare landings and takeoffs.
• Provide escorts, directions, and safety standby for staff, patients, and visitors during off-hours or sensitive situations (e.g., terminations, TDO hearings).
• Intervene in disputes, maintain order, and assist staff with aggressive individuals to prevent injuries.
• Document all rounds, incidents, and reports completely and submit them by the end of the shift.
• Use the RMS Public Safety incident system and VH Risk Qual System proficiently; communicate information confidentially as required.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• One year of experience in law enforcement, public safety, college security, or fire departments preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart Association (AHA) ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) required prior to orientation completion.
• International Association for Healthcare Public Safety and Security Basic Exam within 1 year of hire.
• ASP baton, handcuff, OC foam spray, and aggression management training within 6 months of hire.

• Strong public relations and communication skills; ability to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds and ethnicities.
• Compassion and ability to assist individuals with special needs (e.g., age, mental capacity).
• Quick thinking, problem-solving, and application of common sense, local, state, and federal laws, and VH policies.
• Ability to work alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, and flex schedules.
• Available for duty assignments at any Valley Health System facility (temporary or permanent).
