After School Teacher

Make a positive difference in the lives of elementary school children by teaching them to play chess after school! Silver Knights Chess Academy has taught chess to over 120,000 children in our 19‑year history. We provide curriculum and thorough, paid training on how to help children learn chess in a small‑group teaching setting.

Pay

Starting at $55 per hour (long club). Note the total time commitment is longer due to setup and cleanup.

Schedule

Part‑time after‑school hours beginning in the fall. Sample day:

• 2:45 pm – Arrive at school, check in, set up
• 3:00 pm – Kids arrive, you teach lesson
• 3:20 pm – Kids play practice games
• 4:00 pm – Clean up, parent pickup

Must be available at least three weekdays during the school year between 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm.

Responsibilities

• Manage a classroom of 10‑20 students.
• Use the provided curriculum to demonstrate and effectively communicate all basic chess rules and strategies (piece movement, castling, check, checkmate, etc.).
• Promote good sportsmanship among students.
• Responsibly store and maintain all teaching equipment and materials.
• Supervise parent pickup.

Qualifications

• Interest and enthusiasm for chess (master‑level skill not required).
• Desire to work with children ages 5‑11.
• Availability to work part‑time after‑school hours.
• Experience as a camp counselor, tutor, teacher, coach, after‑school instructor, or in preschool/daycare is a plus.
• Reliable vehicle for transportation.
• Ability to lift 25 lb of teaching equipment.
• Ability to learn and use new software tools.
