About the role
SmartStart Education seeks a small-group STEM tutor to work with K-12th grade students who are struggling with fundamental STEM skills. Tutors will lead groups of 3-5 students at local shelters in Dayton (zip codes 45402, 45405, and/or 45417) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The position runs from September 15, 2026 to May 21, 2027.
Tutors will take daily attendance and monitor student progress using a personal mobile device. Flexibility and comfort working in shelter settings are required.
Responsibilities
- Tutor small groups of 3-5 K-12 students in STEM subjects
- Address fundamental skill gaps identified in students
- Take daily attendance and track student progress
- Work in local shelter environments
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (applications with anticipated graduation dates will not be considered)
- At least one year of teaching or tutoring experience in a school or educational setting
- Mastery of K-12 STEM concepts and skills
- Understanding of challenges faced by urban students, including racial, socio-economic, and cultural disparities
- Strong commitment to student success
- Excellent punctuality and adherence to schedules
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to commute to designated locations in Dayton
- Comfort navigating shelter environments, including hallways, shared rooms, and stairways
Pay
$30.60–$34.00 per hour
Schedule
Monday–Thursday, 4:00 pm–6:00 pm
September 15, 2026 – May 21, 2027
